Sally E. Gering, age 77, of Sheboygan, died on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the Sheboygan Senior Community.  She was born on September 20, 1940, to the late Burton and Elfrieda Schiemann Van Horn Sr.  She was born and raised in Omaha, NE and graduated from North High School in 1958. After graduation, she left home and moved to California to be closer to her mother. She had always wanted to travel and she got her wish when she met and married her future husband, Roger E. Gering. They were married Sept 29, 1962 at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada and the next 20 years were spent living the life of an Air Force Family. Sally loved experiencing living in different places in the United States and abroad in Europe and was very proud of being an “Air Force Wife”.

During her life of living on Air Force bases, she was always involved in various organizations, and was most proud of being a member of the NCO Wives club, where she served as secretary, while living in Columbus AFB, Mississippi. When the family had relocated to Omaha (Offutt AFB), Sally decided to go back to school and attended Omaha Business School from which she earned her degree.

Upon Roger’s retirement from the Air Force in 1978, the family moved to Sheboygan and has called this city home ever since. Shortly after arriving here, Sally got a job at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center and worked there for 27 years until her retirement in 2005. After retirement, she stayed on and became a volunteer. This was a service she enjoyed doing and she always loved interacting with her former co-workers and the other volunteers.

Sally was also a long and faithful member of St Luke’s United Methodist Church and was involved in many of its activities, which included the Rachel Circle, the United Methodist Women group and helping with the Christ meal.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, shopping and visiting historic sites.  Sally also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Sally is survived by her husband, Roger, of Sheboygan; three children, Kevin (Sue) Gering, of Sheboygan, Patrick (Marianne Tripp) of Fitchburg, and Colleen (Thomas) Schlieder, of Sheboygan; three grandchildren, Jason Gering of Misawa AFB, Japan, Austin Gering of Sheboygan and Sarah Schlieder of Bethesda, MD.  She is further survived by many other relatives and friends.  Sally was preceded in death by her brother, Burton Van Horn Jr, her parents, grandparents and various aunts and uncles.

A memorial service for Sally will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 623 Ontario Ave., Sheboygan with Rev. Roger Clapp officiating.  Family and friends may gather at the church on Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.  Entombment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established and may be directed to The Sheboygan County Humane Society.
