Norbert Robert Abromaitis, 93, of Sheboygan, passed away Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Sheboygan Falls.
He was born August 26,1924 in Sheboygan to John and Agatha Abromaitis. He attended local schools and graduated from Sheboygan Central High School. He enlisted in the Army and served in an Engineering Company which was assigned to rebuilding roads and bridges ahead of the Allied advance across France and into Germany. After VE Day his unit was reassigned to the South Pacific where he eventually witnessed VJ Day and the end of World War II.
After returning to Sheboygan, he married Virginia Gillingham, raised his three children, and spent nearly his entire working career with the Sheboygan Police Department retiring in 1979 as a Detective. One of his proudest moments as a Police Detective was helping the FBI to apprehend a bank robber who had robbed the Howards Grove State Bank. For his efforts, he received a commendation letter from then FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.
As a teenager, Norbert soon received the nickname "Abby" from his friends who had difficulty pronouncing his last name. He answered to this name for the rest of his life. Abby enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and watching Packer and Brewer games. In his later years he was a "regular", meeting with friends each morning for coffee and breakfast at McDonalds.
Abby was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ginny, an infant son Richie as well as his brother John (Loretta) Abromaitis and sister Adele (Alex) Jordan.
He is survived by his daughter Sandra (Michael) Ries, his son David (Leslie) Abromaitis, and his daughter Debra (Tom) Jansen. He is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
