Max A. Tharp, 83, of Sheboygan went home to our Lord on Thursday, January 4,2018. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with many health issues. Max was born on November 23, 1934 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was the son of Frank and Myrtle(Kephart) Tharp.
He graduated from Ottumwa High School, and he continued his education at Parson's College until he was inducted into the United States Army. He proudly served with the 235 Headquarters in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Max started his professional career as a Purchasing Manager at the Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa. In this capacity he did much traveling and problem solving to help keep America militarily safe. In 1972 Max and his family moved to Sheboygan, Wi, where he enjoyed working as a Sales and Purchasing Manager at Consin Components Corporation. After a 30 year career at Consin, he joined Packaging Systems of Wisconsin. He was very proud that he was a key member for the growth and development of P.S.W.
Family members and friends remember Max's quick wit and sense of humor. In fact, almost every story told about him is punctuated by bouts of laughter. He loved to share his humor and warmth by giving people nicknames and joking around with others. But, Max also had a very competitive spirit. He played many sports including basketball where shooting hoops in the driveway was always a common occurrence.
He was privileged to have coached many years at St. Dominic's School. He loved his kids there, especially when they won their basketball games. Max was a Elk member at Lodge 299 in Sheboygan. He belonged to several committees, where they raised money for scholarships for local athletes. For many years, he also helped establish the golf outing to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Max is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Suzanne; six children, Debbie Tracy(Mike), Neenah, WI, Michael Tharp(Debbie), Apple Valley, MN, Bob Tharp(Vicki), Lafayette, IN, Patrick Tharp(Lisa), West Lafayette, IN, John Tharp(Jennifer), Hillsdale, MI and Tracy Bell(Matthew) Germantown, WI; 18 grandchildren, Patrick Tracy( Shauna), Shannon Tracy, Ashley Tracy, Katie Tharp, Kristine Tharp, Joseph Tharp, Emily Tharp, Ben Tharp, Allison Tharp, Brianna Tharp, Angela Tharp, Patrick Tharp, Alyssa Tharp, McKayla Tharp, Logan Tharp, Lukas Tharp, Mya Bell and Kylee Bell; one great grandchild, Flynn Tracy. Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends further survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard, and his sisters, Jean Coltrain, and his twin sister, Maxine Bedford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 807 Superior Ave., Sheboygan, at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2018. Officiating will be Father Matthew Widder. Visitation will precede the Mass at the church on Friday from 10a.m. -12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Max's name.
