    Barbara J. Pelkin, 84 of Sheboygan passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017.  Barbara was born July 26, 1933 in Sheboygan to the late Lewis and Helen Poppe.  Barbara played the flute in the Central High School Band and was a salutatorian graduate 1951.  After working briefly as a reporter for the Sheboygan Press she then furthered her education at UW-Milwaukee, earning her Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1961 and her Master’s Degree in 1969.  While teaching in Fox Point in 1972 she married Dwight Pelkin.  In 1977 she joined the Kohler School system where she taught elementary grades until retiring in 1989.

    Barbara loved reading, was an avid sports fanatic.  She enjoyed golf for many years with her husband around Wisconsin and Myrtle Beach.  She travelled by car, rail, air and ship from Quebec to Mexico and Hawaii. She was an enthusiast!

    Barbara was a volunteer at Heritage School and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.  In her younger days she was a camp director at Girl Scout Camp Evelyn Heronymous.

    Barbara is survived by her step-daughters Greensky (Ron) Deardorff of Eau Claire, and Terra (late Will) Hangen of Santa Cruz, CA, grandsons Colt and Lane Hangen, a nephew David (Barbara) Bauer of Florence, WI, great nieces and great nephews and dear friend Susan Dexheimer. 

    Barbara was preceded in death by her brother Robert in 1952 (Korean War), and a sister Virginia Ehrenreich.

    Family and friends may call at the Reinbold-Novak Funeral Home, 1535 S. 12th Street, Sheboygan on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 1-2 p.m.  Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Cindy Thompson, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial to take place in the Wildwood Cemetery.

    In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Bookworm Gardens in Barbara’s name.
